Gamma-Butyrolactone from BDO

Gamma - Butyrolactone from Butanediol dehydrogenation (GBL)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GAMMA-BUTYROLACTONE FROM BUTANEDIOL DEHYDROGENATION (GBL)

γ-Butyrolactone (GBL) is a hygroscopic colorless, water-miscible liquid used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals.

GBL is mainly used in the manufacturing of N-Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) and 2-Pyrrolidone, which are widely used as industrial chemicals. Thanks to its strong solvency properties, GBL is also used as circuit board cleaning in electronics and paint stripping.

CONSER, having an extensive experience in the branch of Maleic Anhydride derivatives - Butanediol, Tetrahydrofuran, Gamma-Butryrolactone -, developed a process for the production of GBL from Butanediol dehydrogenation. This technology has many benefits, such as: nearly total BDO conversion; very high GBL selectivity; low catalyst consumption; high GBL purity (electronic grade); low utilities consumption.

CONSER is able to provide the technical design also for the co-production of Gamma-Butyrolactone, Butanediol and Tetrahydrofuran from Maleic Anhydride. For additional information on the latter, see ‘Gamma-Butyrolactone’ page.

Tetrahydrofuran

Tetrahydrofuran (THF)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TETRAHYDROFURAN (THF)

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a heterocyclic organic compound, and is a colorless, water-miscible organic liquid with low viscosity. It is mainly used as a precursor to polymers.

THF major use is as monomer of the Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG). PTMEG is a component of cast and thermoplastic urethane elastomers, polyurethane stretch fibers (Spandex), and high-performance Copolyester-Polyether elastomers (COPE). Tetrahydrofuran is also used as a solvent in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cements, pharmaceuticals and coatings, precision magnetic tape manufacture.

CONSER technology is based on the esterification of Maleic Anhydride with methanol, followed by hydrogenation of the resulting ester, and the consequent co-production of Tetrahydrofuran, Butanediol (BDO) and Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL). The process allows very high flexibility in the final products distribution, with the highest purity standards, and it can be well integrated with the upstream Maleic Anhydride technology.

CONSER process provides THF with the best purity grade, which is suitable for the downstream PTMEG production.
