Gamma-Butyrolactone from BDO

Gamma - Butyrolactone from Butanediol dehydrogenation (GBL)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GAMMA-BUTYROLACTONE FROM BUTANEDIOL DEHYDROGENATION (GBL)

γ-Butyrolactone (GBL) is a hygroscopic colorless, water-miscible liquid used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals.

GBL is mainly used in the manufacturing of N-Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) and 2-Pyrrolidone, which are widely used as industrial chemicals. Thanks to its strong solvency properties, GBL is also used as circuit board cleaning in electronics and paint stripping.

CONSER, having an extensive experience in the branch of Maleic Anhydride derivatives - Butanediol, Tetrahydrofuran, Gamma-Butryrolactone -, developed a process for the production of GBL from Butanediol dehydrogenation. This technology has many benefits, such as: nearly total BDO conversion; very high GBL selectivity; low catalyst consumption; high GBL purity (electronic grade); low utilities consumption.

CONSER is able to provide the technical design also for the co-production of Gamma-Butyrolactone, Butanediol and Tetrahydrofuran from Maleic Anhydride. For additional information on the latter, see ‘Gamma-Butyrolactone’ page.

Special Anhydrides

Special Anhydrides

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SPECIAL ANHYDRIDES

CONSER is in position to offer the technology for the production of special anhydrides, which are used in the fields of coatings, epoxy resin curing agents, polyester resins, adhesives, plasticizers, pesticides, etc.                        These anhydrides include tetra and hexahydrophthalic anhydrides (THPA, HHPA), or methyltetra (MTHPA) and methyl-hexa (MHHPA) derivatives.

THPA and MTHPA are produced by the Diels-Alder reaction of Maleic Anhydride (MAN) respectively with butadiene or isoprene.

HHPA and MHHPA are produced by hydrogenating either THPA or MTHPA.

PTMEG

PolyTetraMethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYTETRAMETHYLENE ETHER GLYCOL (PTMEG)

Polytetrahydrofuran, also called PolyTetraMethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG), is the polymer of Tetrahydrofuran (THF), or it can be viewed as the polyether derived from 1,4-Butanediol (BDO).

PTMEG, commercially available as low average molecular weight grades - between 250 and 3000 daltons -, is mainly used as component of cast and thermoplastic polyurethanes, polyurethane stretch and elastic fibers (Spandex), and high-performance copolyester-polyether elastomers (COPE).

As proven by the extensive research and the excellent products of the plants in operation, CONSER has full experience in the PTMEG process field.

The technology for the production of PolyTetraMethylene Ether Glycol, available through CONSER, is characterized by the high flexibility of PTMEG high quality polymer grades, and can be well integrated with the upstream Maleic Anhydride and Tetrahydrofuran production processes.

N-Methyl Pyrrolidone

N-Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF N-METHYL PYRROLIDONE (NMP)

N-Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) is a colourless liquid, general-purpose dipolar aprotic organic solvent. Its several advantages include: low volatility; fully miscible with water and most organic solvents; high selective solvent (including inorganic salts); chlorine free; high biodegradability; non-corrosive; low surface tension; high thermal/chemical resistance; high flash point.

NMP is widely used in many fields of application, such as: electronic industries, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, paints and coatings, oil and gas.

CONSER offers a simple, competitive process for production of N-Methyl-Pyrrolidone (NMP) from Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL) and Mono-Methylamine (MMA). As alternative feedstock, ammonia and methanol can be used in place of MMA.

The process uses a continuous reaction system, yielding the total conversion of GBL, assuring an NMP product meeting the highest quality standards.

Tetrahydrofuran

Tetrahydrofuran (THF)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TETRAHYDROFURAN (THF)

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a heterocyclic organic compound, and is a colorless, water-miscible organic liquid with low viscosity. It is mainly used as a precursor to polymers.

THF major use is as monomer of the Polytetramethylene Ether Glycol (PTMEG). PTMEG is a component of cast and thermoplastic urethane elastomers, polyurethane stretch fibers (Spandex), and high-performance Copolyester-Polyether elastomers (COPE). Tetrahydrofuran is also used as a solvent in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cements, pharmaceuticals and coatings, precision magnetic tape manufacture.

CONSER technology is based on the esterification of Maleic Anhydride with methanol, followed by hydrogenation of the resulting ester, and the consequent co-production of Tetrahydrofuran, Butanediol (BDO) and Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL). The process allows very high flexibility in the final products distribution, with the highest purity standards, and it can be well integrated with the upstream Maleic Anhydride technology.

CONSER process provides THF with the best purity grade, which is suitable for the downstream PTMEG production.

Butanediol (BDO)

TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BUTANEDIOL (BDO)

1,4 Butanediol (BDO) is a low viscosity glycol used as intermediate for the synthesis of other chemicals and polymers.
Thanks to the high reactivity of the two bi-functional OH groups, Butanediol is used in a wide variety of applications, including: Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL) co-production in integrated plants, Polyurethanes, Elastic Fibres, Thermoplastic Elastomers, Spandex, Polybutylene-Terephthalate (PBT), Homopolymers and Copolymers Plastics and others.
